Appearing Before the School Board
Maury County residents, parents/legal guardians of Maury County Public Schools (MCPS) students, and MCPS employees may speak to the Board. At the appropriate time during the meeting, the Chairman will acknowledge the public speaker who will then be asked to speak. The individual will have up to five minutes to address the Board Chair about your topic. You must state your name, address and what you want to discuss. You may ask questions of Board members or staff only if the Chair allows it. Board members or the Superintendent may ask you questions. The Chair may end your comments if you break the law, disrupt the meeting or do not follow the Board's rules.
Public Comment Regarding Non-Agenda Items
The Board provides up to 30 minutes for public comments at meetings with action items. Anyone who wants to speak must sign up before the meeting starts. Comments must relate to an agenda item or a matter within the Board’s authority. Each speaker has up to three minutes, and groups should choose one person to speak for them unless the Board allows otherwise.
The Chair may recognize individuals not on the agenda for remarks to the Board if it’s determined to be of the public’s interest. A majority vote of members present can overrule the decision of the Chair.
Individuals seeking additional information about any item on the agenda shall direct such inquiries to the office of the Superintendent of Schools.
Appeals to the School Board
If you wish to appeal a decision made by Maury County Public Schools, you have a right to appeal it through the School Board. However, you must first try to resolve the issue through the appropriate school or administrative process. If the issue is not resolved after completing those steps, you may submit your appeal in writing to the Superintendent’s office. The school board will then decide whether or not it will hear the appeal.
School Board Meetings
The Board will transact all business at official meetings which may be either regular or special. Every meeting of the Board, except with the attorney to discuss pending or threatened litigation, will be open to the public. Open meetings will be physically accessible to all students, employees and interested citizens. Persons requesting accommodations in order to attend Board meetings should contact the System ADA Coordinator.
Regular Meetings
Regular meetings of the Board shall be held on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m. at a predetermined location. In instances when any regular meeting date falls on a legal holiday, the meeting shall be rescheduled by the chairman. Board Work Sessions occur every third Tuesday of the month.
Special Meetings
The Board shall hold such special meetings as necessary to transact the business of the Board. Such meetings shall be called by the chairman whenever, in his/her judgment, the interests of the schools require it, or when requested to do so by a majority of the Board. The September Regular Board meeting shall be a reorganization meeting, at which time the newly elected members will be recognized, and members will reaffirm the Board Code of Ethics. Only business related to the call of the meeting, and details related to agenda items shall be discussed or transacted by the Board at a special meeting.
Adjourned Meetings
Any regular or special meeting of the Board may be adjourned to a specific time and place.
